OVERVIEW OF CPW PROGRAMS

Economic Significance of Shooting Sports

In the United States, the economic impact of the
sporting arms and ammunition industry totals more than $42 billion and
creates more than 263,000 jobs. The Wildlife and Sport Fish Restoration
Program, managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, is funded by
excise taxes consumers pay on all shooting and fishing related products.
This program is a major source of wildlife conservation funding for all state
wildlife agencies, including Colorado.
Recreational target shooting is a fun, affordable and safe outdoor recreation
activity. Recreational shooting is a lifelong pursuit that families can enjoy
together. As an educational tool, it teaches the fundamental marksmanship
skills required for hunting and provides multiple avenues for families to
get involved in hunting, shooting sports and other outdoor recreation
activities. Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) has a long-standing history of
supporting and promoting shooting sports and the establishment of shooting
ranges.

Shooting Ranges

CPW, Colorado’s public lands, and local businesses
offer convenient and diverse public shooting ranges
that are open all year. CPW’s website is a good
resource for shooting ranges in local communities
and lists 35 archery ranges, 72 shooting ranges and
three combined shooting/archery ranges. cpw.state.

Grants

Among the 2017 awardees are projects that include:
construction of a new range on U.S. Forest Service
land near Idaho Springs, expansion of a shooting
range in Las Animas County, infrastructure
improvements on a range in Routt County.

1/25/18

The CPW shooting range grant program is the
largest of its kind in the nation. CPW has awarded
more than 115 projects in 35 of Colorado’s counties
over the past six years. In 2017, CPW awarded
$685,000 to 12 shooting range projects across the
state. The grants help develop new ranges, upgrade
existing ones, greatly expand recreational shooting
opportunities and open up new facilities for youth
education and shooting competitions.

Partnerships

The Northern Front Range Recreational Sport Shooting
Management Partnership was formed in 2014. Its purpose
is to develop a landscape-level, multi jurisdictional strategy
to provide safe, responsible and accessible recreational sport
shooting opportunities while addressing conflicts near
residential areas and with other recreational users across the
Colorado Front Range. The partnership includes the U.S.
Forest Service (Arapahoe and Roosevelt National Forests and
Pawnee National Grassland), CPW, Boulder County, Clear
Creek County, Gilpin County and Larimer County.

CPW works cooperatively with counties, municipalities,
federal agencies and private organizations in Colorado to
enhance and develop shooting ranges across the state. CPW
expands shooting range access through offerings on state
parks, grant programs and educational partnerships with
schools.

The number of schools involved in the NASP® program grew from 119 schools in 2015 to almost
300 schools with equipment by the end of 2017. We now estimate that there are almost 74,000
students participating in archery during the the school year. During 2017, CPW staff hosted 8 Basic
Archery Instructor courses and trained 138 new instructors across the state. The third annual virtual
state tournament hosted 287 archers and a small contigent of Colorado students participated in the
national tournament in Kentucky. To help support our Colorado schools, the National Archery in
the Schools Program contributed $12,000 towards the $43,000 in grants we were able to offer in
2017.
