Dear Conservation Team,
This letter is intended to inform team members and summarize the 2011 range-wide activities for
the conservation of the Rio Grande cutthroat trout (RGCT). The activities below are divided into
eight main categories identified in the range-wide agreement. The following is a brief summary
of those activities that occurred in 2011.
Population Inventory
In 2011, 47 waters (79 individual surveys) were inventoried within the historic range of RGCT.
The purpose of the inventories was to survey potential occupied RGCT waters (3), monitor
known populations (27), assess the genetic status of RGCT populations (10), collect disease
information (4), development of a genetic AFLP test to distinguish between RGCT and Colorado
River and greenback cutthroat trout (1), and collect habitat information within the historic range
(3).
Population Maintenance
Sympatric non-native fish were mechanically removed from six waters. Three barriers were
improved and fortified using shotcrete and grout. Two waters were surveyed and engineering
was completed for two new barriers.
Population Expansion
Population expansion activities were conducted in 13 waters. Within the lower Rio Grande
geographic management unit (GMU) a chemical reclamation project was completed on Casias Creek
STATE OF COLORADO

(#2 Creek) to restore seven miles of stream to RGCT habitat. The creek was restocked with nearly
8,000 young of the year and over 700 one year old fish. The Placer Creek system (28 miles of
habitat) was stocked with RGCT to establish a second year class of fish. Over 360,000 RGCT were
stocked into various lakes and streams to provide for angler recreation. A road culvert was replaced
to allow fish passage on one water. Three populations were stocked with RGCT to augment the
population.
Protecting/Restoring Habitat
Eight waters were included in the habitat protection/restoration strategy. Activities included a
detailed habitat evaluation resulting in USFS changes in grazing strategies, repairing riparian fencing
to restrict cattle access to the riparian area, and clearing conifer trees that were encroaching on the
stream and reducing water flow.
Education
Four events were attended by range-wide team members where they presented RGCT conservation
topics. Such events included two water festivals, professional affiliations, Native American Fish and
Wildlife Society meetings.
Database Sharing
The annual RGCT Range-wide database workshop was well attended including representatives from
all signatory agencies.
Coordination
The annual range-wide meeting was well attended by all signatory agencies. Other coordination
efforts included RGCT working group meetings in NM and coordination between Colorado Parks
and Wildlife, Rio Grande National Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management regarding
restoration potential in the La Garita drainage of Colorado. A sub-committee within the RGCT
conservation team collaborated on a draft conservation strategy.
Miscellaneous
Miscellaneous activities included continued broodstock development in Colorado and New Mexico.
Thank you for all of your cooperation and participation to produce this report. The conservation and
persistence of the Rio Grande cutthroat trout could not be possible without the continued
cooperation, dedication and professionalism of every team member and their respective agencies.
Sincerely,
Joshua B. Nehring
